Job Description:

Assistant Port Captain is responsible for supporting the Port Captain in the upkeep and repairs of Argosy vessels and facilities. They will maintain contracts and relationships with vendors and municipalities where we operate. The ideal candidate will have proven skills in mechanical thinking, solving problems, and staying on task.  They should be self motivated with an attention to detail. While many assignments are carried out individually, the candidate must be willing to work as a team and collaborate to meet productivity goals, and keep the fleet and facilities operating in a safe, effective, and efficient manner.  It is important for the candidate to see the big picture regarding cost of materials in relation to the maintenance budget, in order to reduce waste.  Troubleshooting to dissect a problem, formulate a solution and execute it will be a common task in this position. 

Essential Job Functions

  • Assist in maintaining, repairing, modifying engines, generators, hydraulic/pneumatic systems, bar equipment, docks, office machines, and other equipment around and throughout Argosy Cruises and Tillicum Village property.
  • Check the general shop duties board and personal duty list daily. Prioritize daily tasks to meet productivity goals by reading the weekly vessel schedule.
  • Manage maintenance projects from start to finish, using ability to plan, organize, and direct maintenance team.
  • Maintain weekly vessel maintenance sheets and perform needed services to vessels and engines. This would include oil, filters, batteries, etc.
  • Maintain vessel restrooms and sewage/sanitation related systems on vessels and at facilities.
  • Maintain electrical and HVAC systems on vessels and at facilities.
  • Use inductive reasoning and evaluate systems to troubleshoot and fix mechanical problems.
  • Monitor and help maintain company door access system
  • Attend association meetings (i.e. NWCCBA, PSHSC, PVA)
  • Manage regulatory environmental regulations (i.e. VGP, Oil Spill Response Plan, etc...)
  • Train maintenance and boat crew in mechanical troubleshooting
  • Support Port Captain as needed with tasks (i.e. payroll, etc..)
  • Be engaged and involved in community issues that could impact Argosy
  • Maintain and manage company security plan
  • Maintain relationships with city officials and landlords (Other than pier 55 location)

Job Requirements and Qualifications:

  • Current Washington State Driver's License with good driving record for last 3 years
  • Transportation Worker Identification Card
  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Read and write English
  • Mechanical, plumbing or construction background
  • Working knowledge of: hydraulics, ventilation, engine installs, shafts/propellers, fuel systems, engine controls, elevators, surface treatments, water systems, sanitary systems, HVAC, motor gear, emergency equipment, electronic equipment, cleaning equipment
  • Boating knowledge and/or knowledge of USCG regulations for K and T boats

Training Requirements:

  • Annual OSHA/WISHA safety trainings
  • Respirator fit test
  • First Aid/Bloodborne Pathogens
  • Shipyard Competent Worker

Physical Requirements:

  • Lift 60 pounds. 
  • Full range of motion in shoulders, elbows, hands, feet, ankles, and knees.
  • Ability to work on your feet for more than 8 hours moving from area to area.
  • Step down from a platform with a 2-foot step. 
  • Must have excellent dexterity, able to manipulate tools and body to kneel, bend, squat or sit in small spaces
  • Ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less, corrected; ability to see clearly at 20 feet or more; good peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus
  • Functional hearing, correctable to normal
  • Must be able to navigate a 55 gallon oil drum on and off vessels, up and down ramps with varying degrees of slope due to tides, and across docks subject to wakes and waves.


This position is intended to start September 2017.
